Johannah is introduced in the midst of the destruction of her life by the suicide of her husband, whom she found hanging in her bedroom closet, followed by the knowledge that he premeditated and financially planned his death to leave her with enough money to live on for years. After much sorrow and pity of family and friends ad nauseam, she flees her state and moves, buying an old Victorian house to start her life over. She soon discovers the house is alive with its own personality, and as her bisexual sister and free-spirited mother come to stay with her to help her pick up the pieces, the house picks up its fervour and begins telling its own story of tragedy and horror locked within its walls. This haunting story is filled with lovable characters and is chilling to the very end.
